What is an RSS feed?

RSS is a simple XML-based system that stands for "Real Simple Syndication." It allows users to subscribe to their favorite web sites, including blogs and news sites, and receive updates through an aggregator when the site posts updated articles or information. Sites with RSS capabilities are usually marked with this symbol:

What is an RSS aggregator?

Think of an RSS aggregator as a web browser for RSS subscriptions. RSS aggregators automatically check a series of RSS feeds for new items on an ongoing basis. This makes it possible to keep track of changes to multiple web sites without tediously re-reading each of the web sites yourself. They detect the additions and present them all together to you in a compact and useful manner.
Most Web browsers come with aggregators. Other aggregators can be found online, for example: GoogleReader, Technorati, MyYahoo, or Newsgator.

How do I get my subscriptions into the aggregator?

Once you know the URL of an RSS feed, you can provide that address to an RSS aggregator program and have the aggregator monitor the feed for you. Most often you can click the RSS symbol and you aggregator program will subscribe automatically. Also, many RSS aggregators come preconfigured with a list of RSS feed URLs for popular news web sites to choose from.

What is a Podcast?

A podcast is an audio or video file that is distributed on the Internet for playback on your computer or mp3 device. A specific podcast aggregator works just like an RSS aggregator that manages your subscriptions: It manages a set of fed URLs that you subscribe to and downloads updated podcasts at a specific interval.
